Family Owned & Operated

Dating from 1875 the Royal Mail Hotel in Lumsden is a historic hotel in the heart of beautiful Northern Southland.

One of the original hotels in the region, the Royal Mail provided weary travellers with accommodation and hospitality and continues to do so today with renovated, warm, and comfortable rooms for cyclists, fishermen, and travellers alike.  Whether you are passing through on the Around the Mountain Cycle Trail, or plan to stay awhile and enjoy the many fishing opportunities Southland has to offer, or explore Milford Sound and Fiordland you are promised an unforgettable experience.

Accommodation

The historic 1875 Royal Mail Hotel has been tastefully renovated and refurbished to provide stylish and comfortable rooms. It is a delightful relaxing place for anglers and families to stay. Our rooms all provide a beautiful view overlooking the town itself and beyond to the banks of the spectacular Oreti River which is only a short walk away.

With 8 different room configurations available, we have a number of room choices to suit your individual needs.

Our Footprint

The Royal Mail Hotel is an environmentally friendly hotel.   , We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment and providing our guests a clean, green and zero waste experience.  We also offer electric car charging for our guests.

We have taken considered steps over the past year to both upgrade our “grand old lady” and provide an exceptional service to our guests while reducing our collective carbon footprints.

History

If this grand old lady could talk, imagine the stories she could tell – tales of lucky miners travelling South with gold found in the Wakatipu, stories of thieves, of sheep rustlers, pioneers and runholders.

A quaint hotel in a historic building with lots of thoughtful touches. The place is updated but totally well done!
